PORT RICHEY, Fla. — A Port Richey man is at home on the mend after he was hit by a car on US 19 and left for dead.
Alex Matias says he was on his motorcycle just after 11 p.m. on Feb. 21 just south of Denton Avenue.
He says after adjusting the visor on his helmet, he saw bright lights in his rear view mirror. Within just a couple of seconds, he felt a car hit the back of his bike and blow past him.
"I just kind of closed my eyes and I said well whatever is going to happen is going to happen,” he said.
He says he landed in the right hand lane facing traffic.
"Now, I see the cars coming towards me so I’m like oh my God I have to get up,” he said. "I knew I was gonna be a pain because it was painful already so I use the helmet to scoot myself my whole body over to the median.”
Afterwards, cars started to stop and jump out to help. He says complete strangers kept him conscious and calm until paramedics got to the scene.
Matias’s arm was broken, he had surgery on it this week. His right leg was severely injured and he still can’t walk on it. The crash was so intense, part of the back rim of his bike broke apart and flew off.
FHP is currently investigating the crash. Matias's brother picked up debris at the crash scene they believe was left behind by the driver. After checking in with FHP, a trooper is collecting it and checking it into evidence.
Matias hopes someone who saw the crash, or knows who did it, will come forward.
